The Republic of Ecuador is located in the
Western Hemisphere, in the northeastern
part of South America, right on top of the
equator.

As one of the smallest countries on the
continent, it shares a border on the North
by Colombia and on the East and South
by Peru, while to the West lies the Pacific
Ocean, a vital resource for the economy
of Ecuador
.

The Republic of Ecuador is composed of
three continental regions and one island
region, the Galapagos Islands, located
about 500 miles off the coast.

In the map to the right, you see the three
continental regions of Ecuador, as well as
the Galapagos Islands, each shaded a
different color.

Colored in yellow is the region known as
La Costa (the Coast), in red is La Sierra
(the Mountains)
, while colored in blue is
El Oriente (the Jungle).
